Mark_UKParticipantHi all,
Can someone advise me about where to begin inquiring about planning permission for an antenna please?
I’m gathering together the bits and pieces to put up a vertical straight 18ft base antenna, it has no ground planes. It’ll be on top of a 6ft pole, fixed to a bracket attached to a corner of the house rather than the chimney. I’m advised by an antenna installer that I may need planning permission, though he went on to say that very few people he’s installed for over many years have bothered, but he mentioned it anyway.
I’m not inclined to put something up, only to be told later to take it down. Though I’ve spoken to my neighbours and they’re all fine with it, I would like permission assuming it’s needed.

Lets start with your answer. Put your pole up and antenna on top and enjoy your hobby. If the neighbours are good with it and they are very happy. 99% you will have many years of fun without any form of planning issue. My self and thousands of others have done the exact same thing. With out any issues.
Okay so now the full speech, and feel free to ignore all of this.
If you have a bad neighbour and a corrupt council as i did in sandwell west midlands you in for a world of not pain but paper work.
Legall its said that anything over 2m taller than your chimney needs planning permission if its fixed to your chimney and if ground mounted 4m tall next to the fence and 6m tall in the middle of the garden.Planning is applied for on line. you need to do a home made sketch of the garden, down loads a few drawings or maps for a location and do a design of what you plan to install. I did all of these with pen, paper and ruler as i do not do CAD.
You pay up front the £450 fee and send all the documents. The council have 101 days to give an answer. the planning officers represents the Councillors and council. They will send out letters to neighbours and ask if they want to pass comment. They then have a council planning meeting where it is discussed. at that point you get 3 minutes to put over your case. I had two speeches prepared one if it was going well one if it was going badly.
At that point the yes or no is given. You can celebrate or prepare to contest that discussion.
Now from this point i go off down a rabbit hole of Councillors back handers bribes and contesting and finally going to abritration, and winning. Very messy and I do and deal with this sort of thing all the time. So the council hand their hands full, with me playing my games to win.
What I will say is , you need to apply for planning for “an antenna support post, frame, mast, structure” You never mention what goes on it and what size and shape the antenna is.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, PLANNING ONLY FOR RADIO ANTENNA SUPPORT MAST!!
There is a huge difference in a 2m colinear and a 160m full sized four bar yagi. If you ask for a specific antenna you can not change it as its a change to planning. You do not need to apply for building regulations by the way. This is not needed as you your self will carry the can for the structures strength and durability. In my case it as a tilt over mast 120mmm square and 11m tall. I added a concrete base and did a drawing of that base as part of planning. All building control does is check that the drawings you have issued to the council will be built to and its up to you to satisfy the structural calculations are correct. If you needed to do building regulations its because you are selling the garden the mast is in as a structurally stable and safe build. Its cheaper not to and to remove the mast. Building controll will cost about £500 to £1000, you will need a structual engineer to do calcs and a foundation design and it will need to have calculations that are within UK specs as well as soil survey and designs look for another £1000+
Any questions please ask.
But just put it up and enjoy
