Recommendations (especially antenna installers) Hi Essex Ham fam. I am personally looking for a company in the leigh-on-sea area who will add a white stick antenna to my chimney. But while looking through the forums, and the whole website, I cannot find anywhere that mentions recommendations. Is that by design? Either way, I really need to get talking to someone who installs antennas. All of the 'TV arial fitters' have said no so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated. SF M7VSX

Advice on Antennas – About to give up before I start! I'n working on foundation and I'm doing okay with the course material. I can get through mocks without too many issues and I'm doing the September course. Where I'm struggling is working out how to practically design a station. The area I'm having most trouble with is Antenna. I have limited space. Working at height is not an area I'm comfortable with. I've considered EFHW, Wire dipole (arrange in a horizontal V?). I have a redundant TV aerial on the roof and approached TV aeriel installers if the could remove the TV antenna and replace with something that will work.For the most part they don't want to know. I'm still thinking the best bet is an EFHW... But even that seems to require height and space I can't acheive (I was looking at 10m of wire). When I investigate options, they're always described as not optimal. Or I can't get enough seperation to comply pass an EMF assesment. (My house is surrounded by bridal path) Really hope someone can give me a reality check as the more I learn, the more confused I am.

Exam question Pete ! Hi Pete, I've just finished the extra test questions (thank you), ready for my big day tomorrow! One question that baffled me. Although the answer is given below, I can't see where satellite gets to mention in the license parameters. ???? ------------- Which frequency is available to Foundation, primarily for amateur radio use and in a band range available for satellite communications? 3.510MHz 10.100MHz 14.260MHz 29.100MHz The answer is in the 4-page exam booklet. In the "Foundation Licence Parameters" table, 28.000MHz to 29.700MHz is the only one with "Primary" in both columns Thanks in advance Dave

Advice about planning permission Hi all, Can someone advise me about where to begin inquiring about planning permission for an antenna please? I'm gathering together the bits and pieces to put up a vertical straight 18ft base antenna, it has no ground planes. It'll be on top of a 6ft pole, fixed to a bracket attached to a corner of the house rather than the chimney. I'm advised by an antenna installer that I may need planning permission, though he went on to say that very few people he's installed for over many years have bothered, but he mentioned it anyway. I'm not inclined to put something up, only to be told later to take it down. Though I've spoken to my neighbours and they're all fine with it, I would like permission assuming it's needed. Mark

Essex Repeater File Hi, I am tring to program my Baofeng UV-5R for the Essex repeaters with the link for the UV-3R https://www.essexham.co.uk/files/baofenguv3r_essexrepeaters.dat, but it just takes me to a web page stating 403 Forbidden. Antenna dilemma Hi all. I hope this is the right place to ask this question of you all. I'm midway through my foundation training at the grand age of 63! and my only experience is what I've learned in the last 2 weeks. I've made a conscious decision to start on 2m only before I get to carried away, but I need some antenna help please. As I'm between two repeaters, I'd like the option of seeing both, so a vertical seems to be the best option. I can mount on the gable end (25m minimum cable run) the loft (below roof height, but it's an easy starting off point) the chimney (because of the shared chimney and neighbours TV aerial, I'm worried about interference and I can only install above my TV aerial) flat roof/side wall (a 5m mast to get it above roof height on a timber framed house). House is 95m above sea level but has hills up to 130m all round for a 10 mile radius. Postcode is CM6 2QT I'd really like to get some thoughts and feedback, even it is "Amateur radio is not for you!!" I'm installing a roof mount in my van, so all is not lost!! Transceiver is a Yaesu FT-3185

First foundation level transceiver Hi, I just got my Foundation licence and live in a basement flat in a city centre. I think my only options are a handheld radio powerful enough to reach the nearest repeater or going to a nearby hill. Can anyone suggest a suitable first transceiver for this situation under £100? Many thanks!

Antenna tuner Hello, back in the day I had a device made by Zetagi which would make possible using an antenna across a wide frequency range. I had a vertical 18ft half-wave antenna much like a thunderpole or moonraker silver rod manufactured for use between 26-30Mhz. By physically assembling the antenna for best SWR at 28Mhz, the Zetagi box would make possible use across the whole 26-30Mhz by electronically "matching" or "tuning" the antenna circuit. To my question.. are such devices like the old Zetagi still in use today, what are they called, and if they're not used anymore what has replaced them? Many thanks

Need help to secure a mast QI am looking for ideas on how to use a concrete boundary marker to secure a mast to hold the end of a End Fed Half Wave. The picture below shows the type of marker and I was thinking of using saddle clamps to secure the mast to the marker but the only holes run north to south and I don't want to try and drill holes in it. The mast will be between and 15' and 20' with no weight on it, just holding the EFHW above the ground. I cannot attach to the fence behind, and I don't want to use guy ropes if I can

Hoping someone can help me identify this antenna and how to how use it I bought this antenna about 5 years ago on eBay. To me it works great but it didn't come with any instructions and I don't really know how it works (soon I will as I'm studying for my icenses). I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me how it works and how to use it effectively. I was going to try and reverse engineer it to see if I can figure out how it's constructed, but haven't done that yet.
