SEARS Jan 2015 Meeting Report

South Essex Amateur Radio Society LogoTuesday the 13th of January was the first meeting of the New Year for SEARS, the South Essex Amateur Radio Society.

The well-attended meeting was held at the Swans Green Hall in Thundersley, and as well as a chance to catch up with fellow club members and visitors, and of course drink tea, it was an opportunity to discuss upcoming club activities:

Canvey Rally 2015

Sunday the 1st of February is the 30th Canvey Rally – If this isn’t a date in your diary, please add it now:

  • Venue: Paddocks Community Centre, Long Road, Canvey Island, SS8 0JA
  • Date: 1st February 2015
  • Time: 10.30am

A great place to go to pick up a bargain, catch up with local amateurs and clubs, and, of course, sample a SEARS bacon buttie.

This year, SEARS we will be supporting the Essex Air Ambulance Trust, and there will be a raffle to help raise money for this excellent local service. The raffle will include a decent selection of prizes, such as a Weather Station (from Waters & Stanton), a BHI NES 10/2 Mk III noise cancelling speaker, a Lenovo TAB A8 8” Tablet, a Baofeng BF UV-5R VHF/UHF handheld, a 12 volt backup battery, and more.

If you’ve not visited the rally before, take a look at our video report on last year’s:

SEARS Training

The second half of the evening saw the first opportunity for the newly-formed training team to discuss plans for the club’s upcoming Foundation training course, and for other members and visitors to get a feel for what SEARS will be offering. Details of training will be announced on the SEARS website in due course, but if you know anyone likely to be interested in getting started in the hobby, please ask them to contact the club to express an interest, so that you can be contacted with more details as they become available.

Next Meeting

The next SEARS meeting will be on Tuesday the 10th of February – A talk by Roland Taylor M0BDB, SEARS member and our local RSGB DRM, on the work of both Essex RAYNET and the RSGB
