St. George’s Day Activation – 23 April 2014

Wednesday the 23rd of April 2014 is St. George’s Day, England’s national day. To celebrate, a group of Essex Hams will be operating a special event station close to Chelmsford, the birthplace of radio.

Here’s event organiser Charlie M0PZT with more on the Essex St. George’s activation:

“Us Essex Hams certainly are a keen bunch – with the excellent weather during March, we managed not only a trip to the seaside (GB5OR Offshore Radio in Walton-on-the-Naze), but even found time to investigate some Narrowboats in Chelmsford (Special event callsign GB0CBN, operated by Dennis Padfield). Keeping our feet firmly on dry land this time, we’re going to be having some /P fun at Galleywood Common just south of Chelmsford.”

On St George’s Day, the station will be using the special event callsign GB1STG. There’ll be a 40m station for “inter-G” contacts running for most of the day, plus CW/SSB and PSK on the higher bands, subject to conditions. A 2m FM station will also be operational for QSOs around Essex (and perhaps beyond). The team aims to be on-site from 10am onwards, and all are welcome.

QTH: Galleywood Common

The location, Galleywood Common, comprises of 175 acres that was originally a defensive fortification during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1813). Later used as a racecourse and golf course, it’s now a nature reserve and a popular location for walks, kite-flying and now: Ham Radio!

Galleywood Common is a public place and has plenty of free parking so if you’re free on Wednesday the 23rd and wish to visit – the team will be happy to see you. The team should be monitoring GB3DA if you need directions, but it’s 500yrds from the A12 junction. The Post Code is CM2 8JU.

If you can’t make the event (as St George’s Day isn’t a national holiday!), then please try to work the callsign if you can. If you’re by a radio, you might also want to listen out for GB0STG which will also be on the air on the 23 April for St George’s Day from the church of St George and St Mary at Church Gresley in Derbyshire.

Happy St. George’s Day in advance…
