An interesting project has started with the goal of providing a free and open-source digital protocol for VHF/UHF. Using FreeDV's Codec2, they have published a new protocol and a reference implementation (PCBs to make a handheld and software for it). They're also working on a repeater and data capabilities.

The idea being you can build these things at home yourself, but with project files being freely available for the usual cut-price manufacturers to sell devices via eBay (much like what happened with MMDVM).

Could be a bit of fun, and open up innovation around VHF/UHF digital.
