70MHz (10 replies)
In Essex & the southeast it's busier than 2m at times
I can recommend the Sirio 3/4 wave vertical antenna, i use one and get good results coupled with a Wouxun quad band transceiver.
Also there is a 4M net run by selim M0XTA once a week , on a Wednesday evening from 8pm for about an hour if that helps at all , he bases himself at Langdon hills , Basildon Essex , Nice and high up xx
Both Selim and myself use a Wouxun on 4m. The model number is KG-UV950PL with 50watts output on 4m
Thank you for your replies and advice. Its good to hear there is activity in Essex - as I think it varies around the UK.
I can recommend the Wouxun 950. It does a lot for the money. Make sure you get the 4M version. The normal one has 10/6/2/.7. You absolutely need the programming cable with it. The software is a pain to use but once you have the radio programmed its good. You have 2 radios in one so you can monitor 2 bands at the same time. It will also receive airband and 10M. It can also be "unlocked" although I don't see any value in doing that to this particular rig. My 4M antenna is down at th moment but I can put it up if you want to do some testing. My QTH is Westcliff on Sea. I have had poor results on 4M so far so need to put a bit more work in :-)
oh and if you are handy with a soldering Iron this might be an option: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/70-to-28-MHz-TRANSVERTER-KIT-4meters-4m-70mhz-VHF-UHF-Ham-Radio-DX-/291516788438?hash=item43dfc12ed6:g:wzsAAOSwH3NXnF8z
you would get SSB too with that. I keep meaning to order one.
Thanks Paul for the information, I am hoping to get a rig for Christmas now so it would be after Christmas before I was in apposition to do some testing, maybe take you up on your offer in January.

I am thinking of purchasing a 4Metre FM transceiver and would be interested to know if there is much 4 Metre activity in Essex.
