The Essex 4m FM Weekly Net? (29 replies)

Hi Guys,
I am thinking about starting an Essex-Wide 4m (70MHz) FM net either on a Wednesday or Thursday evening.
Saying that, I believe something like this needs to be done to encourage existing 4m users and also gain new 4m users within Essex to come onto the 4m band, using it in general and participating in the weekly net.
Other than my proposed Weds or Thurs evenings from 8pm? Can anyone else think of a better day or time? (I can't do Tuesday or Friday evenings)
I would like all who reads this to lend me their support in my idea and give me their help and feedback.
Please let me know and I need to promote the 4m band within Essex and show it can be a shining success and spread all over the UK!
Thanks,

Selim M0XTA

Hi Selim, i couldn't do a thursday night as i am on the acorns net. I think a wednesday night might be good as there are not many nets on that night.

I've decided to start the Essex 4M net on Wednesday Evenings from 8pm on 70.475 FM.

I hope to catch many of you on!

OK lets see if I can come up with something a bit more reliable than my fishing pole setup before next Wednesday. I'm also looking at 4m to 10m transvertors on ebay. £38 for the basic kit to £100 ish for ready built. SSB included :-) Might be able to tempt some peeps who have 10M capability already. It was only my first QSO but seemed a lot more reliable for me than 2M. Lets see how we go..

Sounds great! Looking forward to it. Is this definitely on for Wed 12th then? I hope you get lots of success with this.

Great idea selim ...4m coverage is a lot better than 2m ..operating on 4m will encourage people to improve their stations , antennas , coax etc etc .....can't see much point in 2m nets working through DA and other repeaters...which were originally meant to be for mobile use I may add ....all it proves is that you can get into a repeater...not difficult And doesn't encourage anyone to improve their station !!!!!

It's great that Selim's running the 4m net - Please do your best to support Selim in this.
Steve G4HTZ: Yes, accessing a local repeater doesn't require much in the way of a technical challenge for many, but a 2m net has a huge number of advantages - open to most people, not expensive and doesn't require much in the way of hardware. Agreed, it may not push the boundaries of the hobby, but it does provide an excellent starting ground for newcomers, and most importantly, connects people together. Our net typically gets around 15-20 people a week together to ask questions, share knowledge and chat - lots of friendships have been made. Over 120 people have taken part so far this year, so there's demand. Hopefully as well as joining Selim this Wednesday, you'll perhaps join us on a Monday some day too - perhaps to explain the benefits of other bands / modes and encourage some activity elsewhere on the amateur bands?
