Following on from a discussion within the UK training community, we performed a “UX test” – testing the User Experience of taking the first step in getting a licence.
The starting assumptions were that 1) we knew some very basic details about amateur radio, and 2), we started the national society, the RSGB.
Here’s a video of our findings:
Hopefully you’ll agree with our conclusion that “we must do better“. If you’re involved with running a club, online amateur radio site, a trainer, or just a member of a club… take a look at your own site, and think of that UX – the user experience of someone trying to get started. Can we be better?

Hello Pete,
And that is as it is. I’m glad I found Essex Ham and now I’m near to taking my Foundation Exam. Am I nervous? You bet I am, but I, feel my training has been put together in a really helpful way, easy to follow and understand.
I’m 72 and learning is becoming a little difficult, but it’s fingers crossed now for a pass. If I can do it, so can you with Essex Ham.
Love you all!
Thank you,
Brian
Hi Brian
Just a quick note to wish you all the best for your foundation exam; don’t worry too much! I sincerely think you are in the best place to prepare for that. I have just passed my foundation thanks to Pete & Co. and am now studying for my intermediate exam.
73’s (best regards!)
Kim
