Essex Ham Weather Station

On this page, you’ll find a live weather update from the Essex Ham weather station, and information about amateur weather stations.

Current Conditions in Leigh-on-Sea

The following information comes from the amateur weather station operated by Essex Ham Pete M0PSX, in Leigh-on-Sea:

Other amateur weather stations in Essex

Many amateur weather stations, including ours, upload weather details using APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System) – this is the location-reporting system used by radio amateurs. Here is a live feed of weather stations in Essex that are currently reporting weather information over APRS: Live feed from www.aprs.fi – Click a “WX” for data

Information about our station

The weather station we’re using is the Watson W-8681-Mk2 (A Watson-branded version of a Fine Offset station) –  See: Watson W-8681-Solar on Amazon for more details. It’s a variant of the Aercus Instruments WS3083
Previously, we’ve used the slightly cheaper, but also pretty good Fine Offset WH3080, which at the time of writing is only about £60.

The weather station is in two parts – a unit that you assemble and fit outside, and a receiver for indoors. The outside unit collects temperature, barometric pressure, wind speed, wind direction, humidity and rainfall data, and transmits this on 868MHz to the indoor station. The indoor station displays live data, and if you connect the station to a computer via USB, then the data can be uploaded to the Internet for all to see.

Software

The Watson 8681 comes supplied with a package called “Easy Weather”, which is pretty basic. Our weather app of choice is Cumulus, by SandySoft – This is free, highly customisable, and supports APRS upload, handy for us amateurs.

Setting Up APRS

Once your station is up-and-running and connected to the Internet, you can upload your data to the APRS network – if done correctly, it’ll then appear on the aprs.fi map shown earlier on this page.

Setting up the station to transmit APRS data is fairly straightforward – the settings can be found in the ‘Internet’ tab of Cumulus. In order for you to upload APRS data, you will need to enter your callsign and an APRS password – You can get a password from here: APRS Callpass

If you need any further information on getting your Fine Offset weather station to upload data, please get in touch and we’ll try to help.

Connecting to the Internet

To get weather data uploaded in real-time, you’ll need to keep your computer on 24 hours a day. Looking for a computer with low power consumption is therefore a good idea. At the time of writing, our station is uploading using a reconditioned Acer Aspire Revo desktop computer, which is small, quiet and consumes little power. Many weather station users are choosing an even better solution – the Raspberry Pi. As you probably know, the Raspberry Pi is a tiny, cheap micro-computer that runs the Linux OS. The board is little more than £20, but you might want to get the starter kit, which includes case, power supply and SD card. It seems that the Raspberry Pi weather station app of choice is WVIEW, which does support upload to the APRS network.

If you want a weather station that doesn’t need to connect via a computer, there’s the Wireless Weather Station WeatherRanger, which supports WiFi and Real-time Internet Publishing

Station Accuracy

Positioning your station outside correctly is key to getting good results. Sadly, ours is a good example of how not to do it. It’s on a shed, sheltered from the wind by a large tree, and exposed to direct sunlight. This means that on a hot day, the temperature reads higher than it should, and the wind speed and direction aren’t overly accurate. As you’ll see from the following picture, snow tends to upset it too!

Worth knowing

  • Watch out for spiders – they have a habit of making a QTH in the rain gauge collector, preventing the buckets from tipping during rainfall
  • You’ll need to set your station’s relative pressure to a setting matching a nearby weather station – Ours is set based on Southend Airport’s barometric pressure

Looks like the right model, or is there an alternative? Looking to feed into aprs via Internet also. Thanks

If you send the APRS data over the air on 144.800 rather than directly to the Internet (such as from a remote site with no easy Internet access) would you need a NOV as the station is unattended?

      Hi Dan,

Interesting question, and I had a look in the licence. As it’s transmit-only, it would be a “beacon”. There is a tiny clause on page 25 (Schedule 2) that says:

“It is permissible to transmit positional information using automatic position reporting software on a spot frequency of 144.800 MHz at any one temporary location not within 50 km of NGR TA 012869. The maximum permitted period of unattended operation is 30 minutes”

So, it’s only allowed for 30 minutes. Also, it’s not allowed within 50km of GCHQ Scarborough.

Interesting question. How could you go about doing this?
