As of October 2025, Ofcom’s updated its licence platform to release M8 and M9 callsigns. Here’s a summary:
Existing Intermediates
You can now apply for an M8 or M9 callsign, to replace your existing 2×0 or 2×1 callsign, but expect to have to revoke your Foundation licence too, as part of Ofcom’s plans for UK radio amateurs to have just one callsign.
To change your Intermediate callsign:
- Log on to the Ofcom Licensing Site
- Select ‘Manage’ next to Amateur Radio
- Press “View my licences”
- Select your Intermediate licence and press Amend
At the next screen, select either M8 or M9 from the pulldown, enter your preferred 3-letter suffix and check if your choice is available:

Intermediate Exam Passes
Those taking an Intermediate exam will now only be offered an M8 or M9 callsign – it will no longer be possible to get a 2×0 or 2×1 callsign
Ofcom Password Update
Next time you log on to Ofcom’s site, you’ll likely be prompted to create a more complex password – 14 characters required.
