On Sunday 27 May, two members of Essex Ham were busy supporting the 2018 Girlguiding County Camp at Chigwell Row.
The County Camp lasted three days, with girls and leaders camping across the Bank Holiday weekend. Sunday was devoted to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities, supported by local STEM coordinators ExploreSTEM.
Working alongside coordinator Peter Sutton and fellow STEM ambassador Ian, Ed G8FAX and Pete M0PSX spent a busy day helping with a range of STEM activities.
There were several activities on the go, including:
- Electronics – breadboard-based light and buzzer CW kits
- Amateur radio – a 2m voice station for greetings messages
- ADS-B aircraft tracking using a Raspberry Pi
- Paper rockets
- Rocket and water-bottle launchers
- Something slightly unusual involving vacuum cleaners, water bottles and eggs
- Bubbles
A huge thanks to Rachel G6AMY, who was kept busy for much of the day at the other end of the 2m station, talking to dozens of Guides and Guide leaders.
Thanks also to those who helped cover the radio station during Rachel’s lunch break.
It was great to be part of this year’s County Camp and, hopefully, to inspire some of the Guides to take an interest in science, technology and engineering.
