Online UK Amateur Radio Foundation Exams

From 2020, it’s possible to take your Foundation Amateur Radio Exam online at home, without the need to visit a club to complete practicals or to visit an Exam Centre. Here is the latest information we have on taking your online exam:

Can I take my Foundation exam online at home?

Yes! It is currently possible to apply for an online exam – you’ll be able to take the exam from home using your Windows or Mac computer. You’ll be using special exam software, and an RSGB invigilator will supervise you using your webcam and microphone, to ensure that you don’t cheat.

There’s more information below, or in the RSGB’s Online Exam FAQ

What about the practicals?

These are no longer part of Foundation. These were suspended in April 2020 due to Covid, and the decision was made in September 2021 to get rid of the practicals completely.

How do I book my online exam?

The steps to book an online Foundation exam are as follows:

  • Make sure you’ve properly studied. The pass mark is 19/26, and we’d encourage those taking our free Foundation Online course to make sure you get at least 19 in our end-of-course mock.
  • Check that you have a suitable Windows or Mac computer for the exam, stable Internet connection and a webcam – as per the specifications listed here
  • Book your online exam via the RSG’s website: RSGB Book an Exam and make payment of the exam fee (£35.50)
  • About a week before the exam, the RSGB will be in touch re. next steps, which include installing the special exam software and a pre-exam video call with RSGB

If you need to call the RSGB Exam team, the number is 01234-832700 (8.30am-4.30pm Monday to Friday), although note that they are very busy at the moment

What hardware do I need?

According to the RSGB’s Online Exam FAQ, you’ll need:

  • A Windows (Windows 7+) or Mac (Mac OS 10.8+) desktop or laptop with either 2GB or 4GB of RAM (no tablets, smartphones or Linux)
  • A stable Internet connection with at least 512kbps per candidate
  • A working webcam, microphone and speakers (Headphones are optional)

How can I study for my exam?

There are several options – You can study from the RSGB’s Foundation Manual, get help from your local club’s training team, or study online

Our free revision course isn’t affected by the lockdown, and many are choosing to study with us. Our course offers online lessons, videos and mock tests – If you want to sign up, please complete our course application form.

Normally, courses start at the beginning of each month, but we may offer more frequent courses during the lockdown. We also offer a “Fast Track” course if you have an imminent exam and can’t wait for the next course.

For a flavour of what the course is, and how it works, please watch the following video:

Online Exam FAQ

Questions about taking the exam (28)

E1: Can I do my exam online at home?

Online Amateur Radio StudyYes, you can take the exam online from home without the need to visit a club.

E2: When should I book my exam?

This is one of our most common questions, and the answer is really up to you.

You can book your exam online at any time – Go to the RSGB Exam Booking page to see when the first available dates are, and to book your exam slot.

When you book the exam is up to you. The sensible answer is to suggest that you only book when you’re comfortable you’ve done enough study. The pass mark is 19/26 and when you’re comfy that you’ll be able to get this mark in the exam, that’s a sign that you should be ready for the exam itself.

We’d encourage those taking our free Foundation Online course to make sure you get at least 19 in our end-of-course mock. As our course contains numerous online tests, this will prepare you for the actual online test, so is great preparation.

Alternatively, you could book now to get the first available place, and hope you’ll be prepared enough in time – some are better at studying than others, and some like the pressure. The worst that could happen is that you find you’re struggling with the material, you start getting stressed by the approaching exam, or worst-case, you take the exam before you’re ready, and fail. If that happens – simply take it again (note you need to pay RSGB £35.50 per exam attempt).

For answers to other common questions, see the HamTrain FAQ.

E5: What practicals do I need to do?

None – it’s just an online exam

Until March 2020, candidates had to complete five basic practical exercises. See our Foundation Practicals Information page for full details, and some videos showing what was involved.
Since Covid-19 Lockdown, practicals are no longer required.

E6: What can I take into the exam?

What you can take with you:

According to the EX500 rulebook, you can have the following with you for the exam:

  • You are allowed to use the 4-page exam booklet in the exam. For exams taken at home, you can print the booklet, but it must be free from additional notes.
  • You can take a pen, pencil and a soft rubber
  • You can use a silent, non-programmable calculator (see using a calculator FAQ)
  • You can take a drink and sweets (remove excess packaging)
  • You’re allowed a mascot (!)
  • Blank paper may be permitted by some examiners (although it’s not actually stated in the rules, so check first)
  • A non-electronic translation dictionary is allowed where appropriate

What’s not allowed:

  • No written notes
  • No course books
  • No phones / smartwatches
  • No additional computers
Permalink
b

E7: Can I use notes or diagrams in the exam?

The only notes that you are allowed in the Foundation exam is the 4-page exam booklet (Link: EX307 PDF)

The exam Invigilator will check to make sure that you have not added any notes of your own, and that you have no other material that you can refer to. Using other notes, study material, books, Google, etc, will disqualify you.

Once the exam has started though, you can use a sheet of blank paper, or write on the the EX307 booklet if you need to jot something down or draw out the Ohm’s Law triangle… but only once the exam has started.

b

E8: Can I take notes into the exam?

Sorry, but you can’t take your own notes into the exam – the only paperwork you’re allowed to take in, is the 4-page exam booklet.

b

E9: Can I write notes during the exam?

Yes, you are allowed to have a blank piece of paper and a pen/pencil in the exam. You are also allowed a calculator, and the 4-page exam booklet. You can’t use any other notes during the exam.

b

E10: Can I use a calculator in the exam?

Yes – as long as it’s silent, and non-programmable.

For the Foundation exam, a basic calculator (as opposed to a scientific one) is fine. If you’re taking the exam online, you need a physical calculator, not the calculator on your computer, and not a smartphone calculator.

See our dedicated page on this subject: Amateur radio exams and calculators

E11: What webcam do I need for the exam?

For exams taken at home, you need a webcam. This is so that the invigilator can monitor you during the exam to check that you’re not cheating. You’ll also need a microphone and speakers, so that the examiner can hear you and speak to you. Many webcams have a built-in microphone.

The exam invigilator will ask you to move your webcam around, asking you to point the camera around the room. They need to check out the entire room, to prevent cheating. For this reason, you have to be able to point the webcam where instructed.

If you have a webcam that’s built-in to your laptop, this should be fine. You can also use a USB webcam. A fixed, non-movable webcam (like a wall-mounted webcam) is not ideal.

RSGB will arrange a test video call before the exam, where you get a chance to test your webcam before the exam.

Basic WebcamNot got a moveable webcam? A basic webcam costs around £15. These typically plug into a free USB port on your Windows / Mac computer. If you don’t have a webcam, buy yourself a cheap one online (or in larger supermarkets), or borrow one for the exam.

Want to buy one online? See: Webcams on Amazon or Webcams on e-Bay

  • A stable Internet connection, ideally with a constant 2Mbps speed
  • A working webcam (USB or built-in to a moveable laptop), microphone and speakers (Headphones are optional)

The exam software does not run on an iPad, Tablet, Chromebook or Linux device.

E19: Where can I get some mock exams?

There are plenty of options for mock tests:

Mocks from us

During our online course we have a mid-course mock, and at the end of the course, a full mock test.

There is an option to get some more mocks from us. We’re very grateful to those who take part in our courses and find them so useful that they want to say “thanks” with a donation. For those who complete our course, and are kind enough to make a donation, we offer a “thank you” in the form of some “bonus mock tests” – these are in a dedicated Schoology classroom separate from the main course. From here, you can take a further 5 mock tests if you wish – which some may find handy in the run-up to an exam. Also, if you’ve made a donation, you can ask for a PDF “Certificate of Completion”.

If you’ve finished the course, found it useful and fancy making a small donation to help us to continue to run these courses – we can send you a certificate and some extra mocks as a “thanks”. If you decide to make a donation, you can do so here: www.essexham.co.uk/train/thanks

Other mocks

You can download free mock papers from the RSGB Mocks Page.

There are also apps for Apple iOS and Android phones that offer mock tests on your smartphone.

There are also other websites offering mock tests – although make sure they are for the syllabus that started from 1st September 2019, not the older syllabus.

Finally, there’s also the RSGB Exam Secrets book that contains additional mock questions.

E20: I suffer from dyslexia – is there any help available?

Yes. See our guide to Amateur Radio & Dyslexia, or the following short video:

b

E21: What happens if I fail the exam?

“Do you have to pay more then once if you fail an exam and have to retake it?”

Yes – an exam fee is payable for each exam that you sit. That’s why we recommend that you pass our mock test before paying out for an exam

E22: Is my room suitable for the exam?

If you’re taking your exam at home, then you will be monitored over a webcam during your exam, and before the exam starts, the invigilator will check that your room is suitable.

We’re sometimes asked what makes a room suitable/unsuitable – that will be up to the invigilator, but here is some basic guidance:

  • No visible notes – As a reminder, you are only allowed the 4-page exam booklet during your exam, so notebooks, manuals, etc need to be kept out of the exam room. Similarly, wallpapering the Ohms Law triangle all around the room is a no-no
  • No other computers / devices – You’re not allowed to look answers up online, so no second computer, second monitor, extra laptop, no phones and tablets. You may also be asked to remove any smartwatch you may be wearing, and it’s a good idea to remove smart speakers
  • No-one else in the room, or able to enter the room – For obvious reasons, there should be no-one else in the room, or able to enter the room during the exam

It’s all common-sense stuff – the invigilator needs to be sure that you aren’t able to cheat.

Normally, you’ll have a test call with your invigilator in the week before your exam – they will check out your room via webcam and can advice you. They’ll check again on the day of the exam, and on the day other checks are made to ensure no cheating.

E23: What is the exam pass rate?

The Foundation exam has 26 questions, and you are allowed one hour to complete the exam.

The pass mark is 19/26 (73%)

b

E24: Does Essex Ham conduct the Foundation Exam?

No – The exam is managed by the RSGB, the Radio Society of Great Britain

b

E25: Do I need to be a member of a club to do my exam?

No!

There is no requirement to be a member of a club to take your exam. If you wish, you can book your exam direct with the RSGB. See how to book my exam

b

E26: Do I need to be a member of the RSGB to do my exam?

No

b

E27: Where is my candidate number?

When you go to book your exam on the RSGB website, you’ll see a box labelled “Candidate Number (if known)”. This is to help the RSGB find you on their system.

Candidate Number

When you book an exam, RSGB issues you with a candidate number. So, the very first time you book an exam, you won’t be on the RSGB system and won’t have a candidate number yet – in that case, leave the box blank.

If you are taking a second exam (either a retake or an Intermediate/Full exam), then you’ll be on the system and have an RSGB candidate number.

As far as the form is concerned, if you have been given a number by RSGB, then put that number into the box. If you don’t have a number yet, or can’t find the number that RSGB has issued you before, just leave it blank.

E28. I don’t have photo ID

If you’re taking the amateur radio exam either in person, or online, photo ID is required by the RSGB.

The reason that RSGB require a photo ID, is to prove that the person sitting the exam is the named person.

If you don’t have a passport or driving licence, any other photo ID will do, even an expired one.

As you’re probably aware, you now need photo ID to vote, see apply for voter photo ID.

If you really have no photo ID, give the RSGB exam team a call on 01234 832 700 to see what they recommend.

We’ve outlined the process above – when you are confident that you can get 19/26 in a mock test, contact the club that you were intending to take your exam with, and ask them to contact RSGB on your behalf to arrange a date.

        Hi Les,

If you’re looking to take the exam at home, then you’re right – you can’t take the exam on a tablet – it has to be a Windows or Mac OS computer. Your options would seem to be:

        1. Borrow a laptop from a friend or family member to take the exam
        2. Arrange to visit a friend of family member for the exam and use their computer
        3. Make arrangements to get to a local club and take the exam at their premises (a paper-based exam is possible)
4, Contact your local club to see if they can help with local arrangements (perhaps including loan of a suitable laptop for the exam)

If we can help with any extra advice, please ask.

Good question. Traditionally, this has always been handled by a club’s Exam Secretary, as they can co-ordinate with their students, the exam venue and the RSGB “as one”. I’ll find out from RSGB and update this page accordingly when I get an answer.

That is what I did as well (sent the question to RSGB)…
I contacted the club where I wanted to sit the exam and they responded that need to ask RSGB as I am not a member of their club. Was going to be but the whole situation (pandemic) locked down the club as well. It looks like RSGB still have not sorted out every possible problem/situation.
I downloaded application needed for the exam and it looks like your email address, needs be already registered somewhere to log in, so now I even can’t try the app…

If you’re referring to the TestReach exam application, yes, this won’t do anything until your details have been registered with the RSGB – you’ll need to book an exam first. If your local club won’t help, try another club. Also, keep an eye on this page and we’ll update you when we hear back from RSGB

As I understand it, no-one else is allowed in the room during the exam, but previously, help has been available for people with dyslexia. Best to talk to your club’s Exam Secretary with details of your requirements, and they can find out how best to help based on RSGB advice.

Under normal circumstances, you would usually have arranged your practical and exams with the training team at your local club – Clubs are listed here: https://rsgb.org/main/clubs/club-finder/ – As above, we’ve asked the RSGB for clarification.

I have the Foundation book and have begun to study.
Can I proceed towards taking the online exam?

Yes you can. When you are confident you’ll be able to pass (19/26 in a mock), then you can arrange your online exam as outlined above

Hello All, I think my answer may already be answered above but I’ll try my question. It’s simply, do I have to be a member of the RSGB to apply for the Foundation Exam?
ps. I’m starting the course with Pete tomorrow and have been a SWL since the 60’s so feel a little confident in passing

Hello All. Great news – yes, it can be booked directly:

“You would need to complete the EX200 candidate application from with your details and return it to me via email – https://rsgb.org/main/clubs-training/forms/
Please call the Exam Department from Monday on 01234 832700 to schedule a date and time for your exam before making the payment, as you will need to quote this information during the payment process.
    http://www.rsgb.org/exampay
Please remember that we may be experiencing high volumes of calls. We appreciate your patience during this time.”

I was given trial email and password but there is something wrong with one of them. Once sorted I will post it in here as well.

    Stay safe

    Hi Pete,

I think I don’t need to look for “nearby” HAM club (all lockeddown as well) because you are here and you have a club that can help me or possibly others who wish to take the exam.

Can I apply (online) as one of your club member?

    Hi Pete,
    Thanks for all the useful words. As there are some conflicting words in the above comments and the web content above thaose (totally understandable as things are fast moving at the moment!) and there does appear to be a lot of interest, can we surmise that;

*You do not need to be a member of a club – Most are locked down now anyway
*You do not need to be a member of the RSGB
*You do not need to have completed any formal training if you are confident you can attain 19/26, using mock exams available online as required
*The RSGB can be contacted direct after the 6th of April to make an application for an exam.

As the paperwork still has to catch up with the new process, then can we surmise that on the 6th of April, we should apply for an exam using the form linked to in a posting above (RSGB Form EX200) putting in “Online” for exam venue and “Please advise available date(s)” for Exam Date. The form says that the form should be printed and signed, but one of the bullet point on this page say it can be emailed. Presumably, we would need to state on the form that the payment will be made online when the payment page on the RSGB shop changes its status from that at the moment which is unavailable to take payments? Alternatively, call the number on the RSGB online shop with card details?

Thanks for your help – Much appreciated and appreciate that information is hard to come by at the moment!

Windy, may I share some words as I’m just doing this…?
I’ve done my exam prep and went onto RSGB’s site on the 6th and downloaded the exam entry form, filled it in, gave it an electronic signature, then emailed it to the exam department – exams@rsgb.org.uk. (I’m not a membber of a club).
They mailed back very quickly and told me they’d be in contact when they can about an exam date but they are quite busy, which is understandble, so I’m just sitting back now.
Once they’ve got the date to you, then is the time for payment via the link that they send you.

Hopefully this answers a couple of the questions you had.

    James

    Hi Pete,

In reference to being able to take the amateur radio Foundation exam online from home, this is great news!
I’d be very interested in accessing the Extra Mocks you mentioned in your email.
I’m going to go over the Schoolology Material again, and read the manual once more.

Should I do this all before applying for the exam with the RSGB ? Or shall I apply whilst I’m revising? (i.e. are the wait times with RSGB significant do you know)

It may take me a couple of weeks to get through all the material again as I’m still working from home full time and also have my kids at home with me.

    Many thanks!

My advice is that if you feel you’re able to get 19/26 on the exam, then you should book a place for an exam direct with the RSGB.

Hi Pete ,very interested in doing the foundation online, I’ve bought the foundation manual/book to study more and refresh things, I’ve been doing the online Mock 1 and Mock 2 exam and getting the pass rate ,but still want to keep reading the booklet, as the main exam should or will differ ? I’m either going to go for December or maybe January 2021, due to commitments, now pretty confident with my mock pass rate, do you presume I book the exam without extra study in virtual online class, thanks for some input steve

    Hi.
    I currently hold a 2e1 call sign.
I’m coming back into radio after a few years out and with my memeort and health problems don’t want to go out.
I would like to move on from my 2e1 but really don’t understand the levels and meanings behind the new systems.
Is this something I could do to move along the radio levels ?

my nationality is german but I studied the course in english and don’t live in Germany, but due to work I live in one of the gulf countries.

The local Radio Amateur Society told me I can only make a licence here, if already I have a European Ham License.

I finished my studies and am ready for the exam. I very much hope for a positive reply.
    Thanks, Garnet

The UK Foundation licence can only be used from within the UK. It is possible to use a UK licence to apply for a reciprocal licence in another country, but it would normally be a UK Full Licence, not the entry-level Foundation licence. Look for the word ‘HAREC’ which is an internationally-recognised licence level (UK Full is HAREC-compliant). Check with your country’s licensing authority to find out what UK licence would be suitable.

It is not a web-based exam. The exam uses special exam software to prevent cheating. The software runs on Windows or Mac OS.

Yes, and you can usually take in a sheet of blank paper – check with the examiner before the exam starts.

Hi Pete, when doing my City and Guilds many years ago we were encouraged to spend the first 10 minutes after exam start regurgitating all the formulas and key details you could remember onto the exam sheet prior to starting paper so you could refer during exam – can we do the same with electrical symbols, Formulas, frequency ranges etc for the foundation?. Many thanks, Roland – ps Great course and info source it must have taken years to put together

Some may not be aware that the TestReach software the RSGB use does actually work over the software compatibility layer WINE, on the Debian family of Linux distros – I am running Linux Mint 20.3 x64

Do you know if the examiners are OK with that? Just wondering in case they detect TestReach running in WINE and think there’s some cheating going on. The software not running on Linux is the one thing that’s put me off taking the HAM exam online.
