Foundation Mock Tests for the UK Amateur Radio Exam

From the author of the popular HamTrain Foundation Study Guide, this book is designed to help candidates practise for the Foundation exam under realistic conditions.

Rather than providing a random collection of amateur radio questions, the book contains six complete Foundation mock tests. Each test has 26 questions covering the syllabus areas in the same proportions as the real examination.

This means you can use each mock exam to check your overall progress and identify syllabus areas where you may need more revision.

Every question includes an explanation of the correct answer, helping you understand where you went wrong rather than simply being given a score.

How are the Foundation mock exams structured?

Each mock test contains 26 questions, divided between the eight Foundation syllabus areas:

  • Licence Conditions: 6 questions
  • Technical Basics: 3 questions
  • Transmitters and Receivers: 3 questions
  • Feeders and Antennas: 3 questions
  • Propagation: 2 questions
  • EMC / Interference: 3 questions
  • Operating Procedures: 3 questions
  • Safety: 3 questions

Using complete, structured mock exams makes it easier to identify weaker areas before sitting the real Foundation examination.

Are the mock questions based on the current RSGB syllabus?

Yes. The questions in the current edition of HamTrain Foundation Mock Tests are based on RSGB syllabus v1.6b, which applies to Foundation examinations from April 2025 onwards.

The Foundation syllabus has changed several times in recent years, so it is important to practise using questions written for the syllabus that applies to your examination.

Foundation exam revision and practice

Mock exams are most useful after you have studied the syllabus. They allow you to check your knowledge across all eight syllabus areas and highlight topics that may need more work.

For best results, we recommend using the HamTrain Foundation Study Guide for revision before moving on to structured mock exam practice.

You can also prepare using Essex Ham’s free Foundation Online course, which has helped thousands of students prepare for their first UK amateur radio licence.
