We’re pleased to announce the launch of HamTrain Foundation Mock Tests, a new exam-practice book designed to help students prepare for the UK amateur radio Foundation licence exam.
Practising with realistic mock exams is one of the best ways to check your progress and build confidence before sitting the real test. This new book contains six complete Foundation mock exams, each designed to reflect the structure and style of the official RSGB Foundation exam.
Realistic practice for the Foundation exam
Each mock test contains 26 questions, matching the format of the real Foundation exam. Across the six tests, the book includes 156 carefully written practice questions, covering all areas of the current RSGB Foundation syllabus v1.6b.
Unlike many collections of random practice questions, these tests are structured in the same way as the actual exam. This allows students to practise working through a full paper and understand how the different syllabus areas are represented in the test.
To support revision, every question includes a short explanation of the correct answer, helping readers identify weaker areas and focus their revision more effectively.
Structured to match the syllabus
Each mock exam is balanced across the main syllabus sections, including:
- Licence conditions
- Technical basics
- Transmitters and receivers
- Feeders and antennas
- Propagation
- EMC and interference
- Operating procedures
- Safety
This structure ensures that the mock exams reflect the distribution of topics seen in the real Foundation licence exam.
Designed to support the HamTrain course
The questions in the book are based on the same material used in the Essex Ham Foundation Online course, which has helped more than 14,000 students prepare for their first amateur radio licence since 2015.
The book is designed to complement the wider HamTrain training resources, which include:
- the HamTrain Foundation Study Guide for structured revision
- the Essex Ham Foundation Online course
- online mock amateur radio exams available on the Essex Ham website
Used together, these resources provide a clear learning path from revision through to realistic exam practice.
For best results, many students use the HamTrain Foundation Study Guide first to revise the syllabus, followed by the Foundation Mock Tests book to practise under exam-style conditions.
Updated for the current exam syllabus
The questions in the book are aligned with the RSGB Foundation syllabus v1.6b, which applies to exams from April 2025 onwards. This ensures the content reflects the current exam structure and licence conditions.
As with the Essex Ham training material, the questions will continue to be reviewed and updated when changes occur to the syllabus or licence rules.
