Problems Signing in?

Some site members would have received an automated message in the early hours of Friday the 19th of Jan, either confirming Essex Ham membership, or advising you of your username and password. Some passwords have been reset as a result.

The reason for this is a tightening of security, to stop fake accounts from being auto-created, which has resulting in some forum spam from China and India recently. I make some changes to the site signup process last night, partly for security and partly to help with upcoming data protection changes, and sadly, the software (a WordPress membership plugin) has decided to send out emails and reset some passwords. Apologies for this – I didn’t expect the software to do that.

It’s not a hack, or a dodgy email – it’s me turning on a WordPress security feature without realising the consequences to some existing users.

If you can’t log in, you’ll need to use the new password emailed out this morning. Feel free to change this from “Profile” when you’re logged in.

If you’re not sure what the current password is, click “forgot password” and it will be emailed to your registered email address.

If you can’t log in with the new password, it’s likely that your web browser is remembering your old password and trying to sign you in with your old password. Many of us use automatic password completion on web browsers, and if your password’s been changed, your browser may still be using the old one.

Again, apologies for the inconvenience. I was trying to beef up security, and the WordPress software’s been a bit over-enthusiastic.

Best regards,
