Summer Solstice at Galleywood 21 June

CARS LogoChelmsford Amateur Radio Society will be operating a special event station, GB1JSS, for the the Summer Solstice…  the longest day of the year.

The event takes place this coming Saturday, the 21st of June 2014 at Galleywood Common, just off the A12.

The event is being organised for CARS by Charlie M0PZT, and those of you at last Monday’s Skills Night will have heard Charlie outlining the details for the event. Here’s Charlie’s summary:

Saturday 21st June is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and is known as the June Summer Solstice. The sun rises at 04:43 and sets at 21:21. It’s all down-hill from there as the evenings will get darker sooner and the higher HF bands will close earlier.

CARS members are taking advantage of the daylight to operate from Galleywood Common for much of this day. Operation will include 40m as much as possible plus the 20m-10m (CW/SSB/Data) subject to conditions. Looking to include a variety of other aspects of the hobby, wind-permitting, we hope to have Peter G3SUY with his Kite Aerial on 160m running full legal power plus Steve M0SHQ will attempt some satellite QSOs using his home-brew yagi. A 2m FM station will also be available for local QSOs.

Would you like to join us? Perhaps to help set-up, operate a radio or just come along for a visit? This is a great opportunity for Foundation and Intermediate holders who will be able to enjoy FULL (Advanced) licence privileges (using the GB-call) on the day.

All are welcome. The event aims to run from 9am to 6pm (or later if we’re all still awake).
