In the dim and distant past , I was hooked on RTTY. I ran a pair of Creed 444,s with punch tape add on using pre programmed station info etc. all in my loft space. If you know what a Creed sounds like you may appreciate how tolerant my neighbours were.I ran this set up for some years but work etc got in the way and eventually I sold everything including the mast. Now I,m the wrong side of 60 and with health becoming an issue , time is more available and I'm looking at getting back in to a rtty type activity. I'm thinking along the lines of a PC based program  running thro 2 mtr or now I'm not tied to class B perhaps an alternative frequency . Finance will be a factor so shareware would be acceptable.  Well ! What d'you think. I will be grateful for your suggestions.

Cheers

As it happens, just now, the data-mode FT8 on 2m is quite popular.
FT8 is part of the WSJT-X suite and that's free, but FT8 is not a conversational mode, just a strict protocol of swapping callsigns/locator/signal reports then move on.
If you want a keyboard conversation with someone then PSK31 would be better and that is part of FLdigi which also includes RTTY and other modes, but that's more of an HF thing, but it is free.

Malcolm, most grateful for your information . I've not heard of FT8. Is the object just to make contact.?

Yes, the software can resolve signals that you can’t even hear, so it’s more about the achievement of making the contact ( often on a band that would appear dead to SSB users) than anything to do with chatting. Part of the magic of how it works is that you have to stick to its rigid message format. In fact it is automated up to a point in that once someone replies to your CQ the software will carry on exchanging locators and reports then the 73s.
